Margin. On notebook paper, it's a thin, blue, top- to- bottom line. Writing belongs to the right of the line, and the space to the left is a no-fly zone--a boundary or buffer. If we ignore the margin, the text stretches all the way across the page, overpowering and overwhelming us.
